Household Repairs & Renovations You May Face This Year

by Jessica Amey

If you are lucky enough to be a homeowner, then you know the risks associated with being one. If you are new to the housing market then it could come as a shock to you that now you need to pay for all your own repairs and replacements. This is often one of the downsides to owning your own property. However, if you put money aside for such eventualities then you will always be in a comfortable position to pay for things. It might also be beneficial to sign up to insurance and breakdown policies so you are covered for the expensive items.

Broken Boiler
One of the most common occurrences a homeowner could face is a broken boiler. This tends to happen during the colder, winter months when your boiler has to work much harder than usual. It is always a good idea to have a boiler inspection or maintenance check annually before winter hits. That way you can know for sure if your boiler is working and if it isn’t, get it repaired in time for the cold spell. You will need to contact a reputable gas engineer to carry out boiler inspections as this can be a very risky job.

Patchy Roof
This is one of those renovations and repair jobs that you could carry out yourself using home tools such as a cordless drill. However, it is always recommended to use professionals so you don’t have to keep going up there. Your roof always needs to be in the best condition and shape possible, this is what protects your home from the outside elements. You should head up to your roof at the end of every winter season to check for any damage. If you notice any then this should be mended straight away. You don’t want to leave a broken roof, even if it is just one tile. This could lead to more expensive repairs in the future, such as water damage or subsidence.

Loft Conversion
If you are on the hunt for a bigger home then there is one more option you could explore. If you just need another room or two then how about a loft conversion? They are much cheaper than moving house and could even add money onto the asking price of your home when you come to sell. A loft conversion isn’t always possible so you will need to ask a contractor to come and inspect your loft space. If they give you the go ahead then you need to figure out how much you want to spend and get the materials you need.

HVAC Maintenance
Do you have air conditioning throughout your property? If so, then this will also need to be regularly maintained in order for it to work effectively. A broken AC unit is never a good thing, especially if you rely on it heavily in the summer. Maintenance and servicing will avoid this, you just need to find the right company or individual to carry it out. This is always a number that you should keep in a handy place as they can be quite temperamental.
